Why Anais?

The mere mention of the name Anais brings to mind fragrances and intoxicating scents of the East, gold pendants, silver beads, and purple ribbons, exotic essences of myrrh and incense, cedar fruits, and mandrake plants.
This must have been what the young Frederick thought as soon as he saw the cousin of his new wife, whom he had married in November 1225—largely for diplomatic reasons—to Yolande of Brienne, who had brought him the crown of Jerusalem. The Emperor was captivated by the women in his entourage, and in particular by Anais, the bride’s cousin, with her deep black eyes and the figure of an odalisque, who carried with her memories of distant lands—Syria, Lebanon, and the island of Cyprus.
